The belgian trbute band of simple minds Waterfront started his career end of October 2007 on initiative of Manu. He called his former drummer (Ivan) and sound engineer (Denis) with whom he shared previous musical moments in other bands. With an idea in mind Manu started searching for a guitarist and bass player. Advertising and giving a few phone calls later, JP (guitar) and Arnaud (bass) are called. During their first meeting Manu’s idea is made up, hearing arguments and listening to the first possible Simple Minds songs, this choice seemed natural to everyone. The first repetitions are productive and amusing…a good omen. Nevertheless, a problem rises very soon : Simple minds without synthesizer does look very good. Eric, synthesizer player, and former musical colleague, colleague and however friend of Manu doesn’t seem ready. During more than a month, he refuses Manu’s uninterrupted request to join the band, too disappointed by his last musical experience. Luckily he finally accepted, certainly tired by his colleague's harassment. Waterfront ! this will be the band’s name. This, by the general public, less known song of the original Simple Minds directory is very recognised by the purists, mixing the new wave and rock spirit of the band. Very soon the band enters studio for a demo. Recording has been achieve within one day (for 3 songs) in Comblain Fairon. Waterfront has also made a live trial on the Fairon stage, to sketch the different stage sound settings, choreographies and material placement… Februrary, first show dates start to raise which implies a certain pressure. Things start to roll during the repetitions : songs become better and even start to ‘sound’. Choruses enter the game. Vinciane (the small one) and Natacha (the tall one) join the rest of the group, already very motivated. Manu has a second occupation. From the beginning of the project he wants to launch the web site, search for concerts and fulfil other constraining steps. This part of the job has been very useful : the band has already made about twelve concerts since the month of may and has already a few other dates to come. These few concerts have been very informative for the band members. Every new concert becomes better than the previous one but less good than the next one. Training goes on in good mood, as well on stage as elsewhere, the group turns out to be a group of friends who know each other for a long time. Let’s hope that it will go on like this… for our ears, our eyes and our good mood !! |
